My Vision Was Blurry!!

My Vision Was BlurryI’ve shared this story with many and it never gets old.

It was fall 2005…

A couple of months ago I woke up and was unable to see!  My vision was blurry, even with my glasses on.  I thought I was dying.  So many things went through my head – diabetes, glaucoma, or who knows what.  It never dawned on me that I was just plain tired – honestly, FATIGUED.

The crazy thing is, I didn’t realize what was happening to me until I called my girlfriend hysterical about the situation.  She gently pointed out to me, “Sherese, you crazy woman, you need to rest.”  After a moment of breathing deeply and about 10 straight hours of sleep, my vision was back.  I slept for the next week and it felt great, but of course I was right back at it.  Movin… and shakin…, working my business.

Guess what?  About a month later, I threw my back out (I wasn’t lifting anything, it just went out) and was laid up for a full week.  No walking, no movement, and yes no working.  Can you imagine what I was thinking?  “My clients, my business, my life…oh my!”  This is crazy now that I think back.  I should’ve been thinking, “…it’s time to rejuvenate and renew in order to move my business forward.”

To make an even longer story short, I didn’t get the point until I threw my back out again just three weeks ago.  Again, I didn’t lift anything the pain just came back.  Needless to say, I’m rejuvenating and renewing.

Lesson Learned
I wanted to share this story with you because we tend to forget to rejuvenate and renew, especially in the early years.  I’m not talking about taking a vacation or taking time off per se, but I’m talking about taking notice.

I’ve listed some activities that I’ve engaged in over the years, that you can do to begin your rejuvenation and renewal:

Learn how to relax (your way).  I’ve never been one to meditate or do yoga; it’s just not my thing.  I relax by doing fun things I like traveling, bowling, playing with my dog; active things.  The point is to find things that relax you on your terms not because everyone else is doing it.

Decide on your office hours and business building hours and stick to them.  I have set specific office hours that I’m available, but I’ve also set aside time to actually work on my business and I’m sticking to it.  It’s not only needed in the beginning but throughout the life of your business.

Learn how to say no –for real!  How?  Be assertive; being assertive means standing your ground without offending the other party.  If you feel guilty about saying no, that’s on you not the other person.

Take responsibility and accept it.  Take responsibility for where you are today and where you’re going and accept it.  No need to continue blaming others or things for where you are and where you’re going.  If you continue to blame you’ll never take action.

Choose your lifestyle strategically.  Just as I teach my clients to approach their businesses strategically, you can use the same techniques to approach how you live.  It’s all about choice and not following the herd.  I’m talking about things like your health, family time, your time, husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend time, vacations, hobbies, your home, fun things, your friends….  How are you living your life?  No matter how, it’s your choice.

Re-focus to stay focused.  Take the time to reevaluate everything and I mean everything.  From the way you manage your career to the way you manage your household.  Make sure you’re doing the right things right.  Remember, you have choices – make them carefully.
