Mindset is critical, especially when it comes to running a business. Yet not many of us are taught how to develop our “thinking” mindset and our “doing” mindset. Our schools and work as employees for others make us adept at doing the work, but not always at building the business to do the work in. If you want to align your thinking and doing mindsets, you might need a couple of perspective shifts to diverge and converge your mental energy.

These three perspectives are part of Effició’s executive series. In this blog series, we share the resources, tools, advice, and infrastructure changes you need to assess, invest, and shift your business. As an executive, founder, or entrepreneur, you need to invest in your organization and yourself if you want to be in business for years to come.

Be adaptable and open to new ideas

To have extraordinary achievement in your business, you shouldn’t limit yourself to tried and true methods and conventional wisdom. Successful entrepreneurs and executives aren’t afraid to adapt and innovate. While you don’t have to ignore conventional advice, be willing to listen to less traditional viewpoints as well.

For example, if you’re following the traditional method of conducting business in your sector and it isn’t working, think of how you can be an industry disruptor. Identify what the problem is in your business and think of creative solutions. Don’t be afraid to adapt and be flexible, especially when solving problems in your business.

A couple of ways to think more creatively and gather new ideas include:

  • Talk to someone whose perspective is entirely different than yours.
  • Journal or write about the problems in your business and be open to new solutions.
  • Invest in a business development program or a business mentor who can help you find solutions you might not have considered.
  • Listen to a podcast or read a book by a business owner who approaches your industry differently than you do.

When you’re open to new ideas and are willing to change plans, when necessary, your business can thrive. Doing business, the same way as everyone else won’t set you apart, thinking creatively and coming up with innovative solutions will.

Work on the business as well as in the business

Working in the business is what we’re commonly taught to do when we’re employees. It’s doing the everyday tasks that move the business forward. However, as a business owner or entrepreneur, you also have to be prepared to work on the business. Working on the business includes forecasting the future, developing the overall direction of the business, and other business development activities that might not get today’s work done, but instead set you up for success in the future.

To work on your business, you must shift from an employee mindset to a CEO mindset. You should set aside time as often as needed to brainstorm where the business is going and examine the overall business development. However, especially when you’re first starting, it can be hard to know what you need to do to work on the business. Learning how to develop a proper business infrastructure is a specific skill set you should invest time and resources into learning.

If you want to learn more about how to effectively work on your business, check out our education program. In this 24-month program, we go over how to build and grow your business in a strategically aligned way. By the end, you’ll feel confident in your ability to not only work on the business but work on building a more aligned and sustainable one.

Learn to let go when needed

There’s a lot in life we can’t control, and business is no different. If you spend every minute thinking about your business and the tactical ways you can improve it, you might harm your business in the long run. Letting go and taking a break every once in a while is needed for you to work smarter, not harder. When you give yourself time away from the business, you refresh your mind and open yourself up to new mindsets.

Letting go doesn’t mean you care any less about the business. It simply means that you understand the importance of breaks and delegating work to others. Successful entrepreneurs understand that sometimes they must invest in themselves as well as the business to save more time and money in the long run. Don’t be afraid to let go, relax, and enjoy life. Not every minute has to be devoted to your business!

When you work on your thinking and doing mindsets, you open up more possibilities and opportunities to build an aligned and sustainable business. These perspective shifts don’t have to be world-altering or change everything about the way you do business. By devoting time each week to working on the business, letting yourself take breaks, and being open to new ideas and approaches, you can adopt successful “thinking” and “doing” mindsets.
