From CORE to Root, digging deep.
An experiential journey from CORE to Root is a hub for the discerning taste – those that want to experience unbridled joy, insatiable curiosity, and intellectual stimulation. I created this space to share personal stories, my learning journey, and rooted concepts; to invite friends to share theirs as well, and to be the breeding ground for living – – the entrepreneur’s life with style. – Sherese Duncan
Entry 2: I Was Unable to See!!
I’ve shared this story with many and it never gets old.
It was Fall of 2005, I woke up and was unable to see! My vision was blurry, even with my glasses on. I thought I was dying. So many things went through my head – diabetes, glaucoma, or who knows what. It never dawned on me that I was just plain tired – honestly, FATIGUED.
The crazy thing is, I didn’t realize what was happening to me until I called a trusted friend hysterical about the situation. She gently pointed out to me, “Sherese, you crazy woman, you need to rest.” After a moment of breathing deeply, then 10 straight hours of sleep, my vision was back. I slept well for the next week and it felt great, but of course I was right back at it. Movin… and shakin…, working my business.
Guess what? About a month later, I threw my back out (I wasn’t lifting anything, it just went out) and was laid up for a full week. No walking, no movement, and yes no working. Can you imagine what I was thinking? “My clients, my business, my life…oh my!” This is crazy, now that I think back. I should’ve been thinking, “…it’s time to rejuvenate and renew in order to move my business forward.”
Needless to say, I didn’t get the point until I threw my back out again one month later. Again, I didn’t lift anything the pain just came back. I finally got the message, rejuvenation and renewing became a large part of my work and personal life. It birthed one of our most popular CORE concepts, lifestyle construction.™
I wanted to share this story with you because we tend to forget to rejuvenate and renew, especially in the early years. I’m not talking about taking a vacation or taking time off per se, this is more about awareness and taking notice.
I’ve listed some activities that I’ve engaged in over the years, that have helped me consistently rejuvenate and renew:
Learn how to relax (your way).
I’ve never been one to sit still, meditate, or do yoga to relax (I do these for other purposes). I relax by doing active things I enjoy, traveling, bowling, playing sports, these are the kind of activities that “relax” me. Find things that allow you to relax, it may not be something that keeps you still, it may be something that gets your adrenaline going!
Decide on your office hours and business interaction hours and stick to them. I have set specific office hours that I’m available, but I’ve also set aside time to actually work on my business and I’m sticking to it. Continue to update and adjust throughout the life of your business.
Learn how to state what you want, and what you don’t want.
How? Be assertive; being assertive means standing your ground without offending the other party. If you feel guilty about saying no, that’s on you not the other person.
Take responsibility and accept it.
Take responsibility for where you are today and where you’re going and accept it. No need to continue blaming others or things for where you are and where you’re going. If you continue to blame you’ll never take action.
Choose your lifestyle strategically.
Just as I teach my clients to approach their businesses strategically, you can use the same techniques to approach how you live. It’s about choice and not following the herd. I’m talking about things like your health, family time, your time, husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend time, vacations, hobbies, your home, fun things, your friends, etc.. How are you living your life? No matter how, it’s your choice.
Re-focus to stay focused.
Take the time to reevaluate everything and I mean everything. From the way you manage your career to the way you manage your household. Make sure you’re doing the right things right.
You have choices – own them.
