Clients often come to me because they want to generate more opportunities–and revenue–for their business. Often, they’re shocked when I tell them the best ways to generate more business opportunities. To grow your business without sacrificing your vision, it helps to take more time away from the day-to-day workings of your business.

In this installment of my Invest In series, we’re discussing how you can invest in actions which will bring you more business opportunities without sacrificing your vision. As business owners and executives, we often get lost in the weeds of our businesses. Yet, the day-to-day tasks aren’t enough; we must also learn the strategies needed to invest in ourselves and our businesses.

Take a Break

One of the best ways to generate more opportunities may sound counterintuitive at first: take a break. When you take a step away from the day-to-day of your business, you gain a different perspective and more insight.

Sometimes we get so focused on our business, we forget the outside world exists. Occasionally, step out of your backyard and into opportunity.

I tell my clients all the time, “As long as you’re focused on your true vision, success will happen.”

They always follow up with, “What can I do in the meantime to generate more profit?”

The answer, “Be open to more opportunities that ignite your strategy.”

You never know what opportunities are available to you until you take a step outside the daily workings of your business. Don’t lose your focus or drive for your vision. They allow you to see the opportunities for a clear path to cash flow. Your business is just icing on the cake. There’s much more in life to dig into.

Save Time for Creativity

Similar to taking a break, make sure you invest time into creative thinking. While this could look like reserving time to paint or write, it also can look like taking time to brainstorm new ideas or products for your business.

By setting aside time for creativity, whether that looks like an art project entirely unrelated to your business or thirty minutes where you brainstorm a creative marketing campaign, you are intentionally setting aside time for a different way of thinking and new insights. Thinking creatively can lead to more opportunities at best and a refreshed mind at worst.

Network

While you might not have considered setting aside time for creativity or taking a break, networking might have been one of the first things to come to mind to generate new business opportunities. Our business can only be as strong as our network. While what you know is important, who you know is also a key factor towards your success.

When networking, it’s best to engage with others in an authentic, curious way instead of going into networking events and conversations wondering what you can get out of it. When we engage without expectation, we’re better able to listen to those around us and make them feel seen.

If done right and with curiosity, you can learn from someone else’s perspective. An often-overlooked benefit of networking is being exposed to new ideas and perspectives, not just new people. Connecting with others, whether over business or life in general, can generate opportunities you might have never considered before starting a particular networking conversation.

Generating more business opportunities is a balancing act between taking action towards your goals and giving yourself the space to breathe and gain a different perspective. It’s a nuanced investment which requires you to be more present in the actions you take towards your goals and the world at large.
